6/14/2018 (Permalink)

We at SERVPRO of Indianapolis North understand that having a water damage in your home or business is an overwhelming experience. You have questions about what can steps to take first and how the process of restoration works. Although every water damage is unique, the overall process stays the same.

Step 1 - Emergency Contact

When you call, our representative will guide you through several questions that will help the SERVPRO Franchise Professional respond to your water emergency more quickly and efficiently. This initial contact is an important part of a fast, effective restoration.

Step 2 - Inspection and Water Damage Assessment

They carefully inspect your property’s water damage, determining the type of water damage and the areas affected. This is a crucial step to creating an effective plan of action that will result in a successful restoration.

Step 3 - Water Removal / Water Extraction

Typically, hundreds or thousands of gallons of water are removed using our powerful pumps and vacuums during the water removal process. The SERVPRO Franchise Professionals start this process as soon as possible to minimize further damage and to help prevent mold growth.

Step 4 - Drying and Dehumidification

After the bulk of the water has been removed, SERVPRO Franchise Professionals use specialized equipment to target the water that’s harder to access. They use less intrusive, scientific drying methods to draw the remaining water and moisture from your property with air movers and dehumidifiers.

Step 5 - Cleaning and Sanitizing

Water damage also affects your belongings, like furniture, clothing, and personal items. SERVPRO Franchise Professionals can clean restorable items using a number of specialized cleaning techniques. They also sanitize with antimicrobial treatments and remove odors using industrial air scrubbers and fogging equipment.

Step 6 - Restoration

The last step is restoring your home or business back to its pre-water damage condition. The restoration step can be relatively minor, such as replacing a few drywall panels, or could include major reconstruction, such as rebuilding entire rooms of a home or business.

If your home or business has experienced a water damage, call SERVPRO of Indianapolis North anytime day or night at 317-846-5282. We will be on site quickly to assess your situation and begin the process of making your property "Like it never even happened."

What is Black Mold?

6/14/2018 (Permalink)

Finding mold in your home, or suspecting that you have a mold problem, can be a scary feeling. We are bombarded with stories about the devastating effects that mold can have on our health and the air quality inside our homes. Before you begin the process of trying to remove the mold, it is important to understand some basic mold facts.

There are several different types of mold. Although many types of mold are capable of producing allergens and irritants, it is black mold (or Stachybotrys chartarum) that is more well known for producing spores that may cause health effects.

If you suspect you may have a mold problem, keep in mind that any type of mold found in the home should be treated with caution. Do not touch or disturb the mold to avoid inadvertently spreading it around your home.

When you contact SERVPRO of Indianapolis North, our trained professionals will assess your unique situation. Mold grows and thrives in moist areas, so any sources of water or moisture will be addressed. Although every mold situation is unique, the process of removing mold is as follows.

Understanding The Mold Remediation Process

Step 1: Emergency Contact

The mold cleanup and restoration process begins when you call SERVPRO of Indianapolis North at 317-846-5282.  Our representative will ask a series of questions to help us determine the necessary equipment, resources, and personnel.

Step 2: Inspection and Mold Damage Assessment

Our trained professionals will carefully inspect your property for visible signs of mold. Mold feeds on cellulose and water and can be hidden from plain view. We use various technologies to detect mold and hidden water sources.

Step 3: Mold Containment

We use various containment procedures to prevent the spread of mold. We may use advanced containment procedures like negative air chambers to isolate the contaminated area with physical barriers and negative air pressure to keep the mold spores from spreading during the cleanup process. All fans and heating and cooling systems will be turned off to prevent the spread of mold.

Step 4: Air Filtration

Our specialized filtration equipment allows our professionals to capture microscopic mold spores out of the air. We utilize powerful “air scrubbers” and HEPA vacuums to prevent the spread of these mold spores while the mold remediation is in process.

Step 5: Removing Mold and Mold-Infested Materials

The mold remediation process depends on the amount of mold growth and the types of surfaces on which the mold appears. Our restoration specialists use antifungal and antimicrobial treatments to eliminate mold colonies and to help prevent new colonies from forming. Removing and disposing of mold-infested porous materials, like drywall and carpeting, may be necessary to remediate heavy mold growth.

Step 6: Cleaning Contents and Belongings

Our specialists will clean your furniture, decorative items, curtains, clothing, and other restorable items affected by mold. We use a variety of cleaning techniques to clean and sanitize your belongings. We're also trained to remove odors and deodorization using fogging equipment.

Step 7: Restoration

Depending on the level of mold damage, drywall, subfloors, and other building materials may be removed. Restoration may involve minor repairs, such as replacing drywall, painting, and installing new carpet; or it may entail major repairs such as the reconstruction of various areas or rooms in a home or business.

We understand that finding mold in your home is scary. Our goal is to give you the peace of mind of knowing that your home is safe and healthy. Call SERVPRO of Indianapolis North at 317-846-5282 today if you have concerns about mold.

Summer Safety Tips for Grilling Outside

6/13/2018 (Permalink)

Summertime and grilling on the patio go hand in hand. After a long, cold winter and too much time indoors, we all look forward to getting outside and enjoying the warm weather with our families. Unfortunately, 5700 home grill-related fires occur each year, resulting in injury and more than $37 million in property damage. Keep your family and home safe this year by following some basic grill safety rules:

1. Keep your grill a safe distance from your home, deck rails, overhanging branches, and people. Heat from the grill can melt siding and the grill fire can flame up, catching nearby structures and objects on fire.

2. Trim the excess fat from the meat before grilling.

3. Use a wire scrub brush to keep your grill and the trays below clean. Accumulated grease and debris can catch fire quickly.

4. Never leave a grill unattended. Keep a watchful eye on children and pets.

Even under the most careful conditions, house fires can happen. If your home has been damaged by smoke or fire, call SERVPRO of Indianapolis North at 317-846-5282. Our professionals have the training and expertise to get your home back to its pre-fire condition quickly.

Tips to Have a Worry Free Summer Vacation

6/11/2018 (Permalink)

Summertime means long hot days, grilling out, and fun vacation plans with your family. We at SERVPRO of Indianapolis North want to help you enjoy your time away without worrying about disaster at home. Follow these tips to minimize your home's risk of expensive water damage during the summer months:

1. Ask a friend or neighbor to periodically check on your home. This will eliminate any nasty surprises upon return. Be sure to show them the location of your water main shut-off (typically in the basement or along the outside foundation of the home).

2. If no one will be at home, consider turning off the water main to your home completely.

3. Inspect your home's gutters and downspouts for debris and blockages.

4. If you have a basement, check to be sure your sump pump is in good working order. Consider a battery back-up in case there is a loss of power.

5. Consider purchasing a water-leak sensor. These relatively inexpensive devices can send an alert directly to your phone in the event of a water damage.

Following these tips can give you the peace of mind to enjoy your well-deserved summer vacation!

Risks To Your Home From Thunderstorms

6/11/2018 (Permalink)

It's summer in central Indiana and that means it's important to keep an eye on the weather. Thunderstorms can mean high winds, lightening strikes and heavy flooding that can cause extensive damage to your home or business. The serious consequences of severe weather can include the following:

* Wind damage (including tornadoes) and hail can cause major structural damage to buildings. Be sure to have a professional inspect your roof following severe weather if you suspect damage. Roof leaks are a major cause of water damage.

* Lightening strikes can be deadly and are the cause of more than 20,000 structural fires each year. Lightening striking a home can also damage electrical appliances such as home electronics, computers and phones.

* Flooding can occur quickly during a thunderstorm. Regularly check to be sure your sump pump is in good working order and consider purchasing a battery-operated backup in case you lose power.

We all know thunderstorms are a part of life in the summer. If your home or business is damaged you don't have to deal with the aftermath on your own. Trust the experienced professionals at SERVPRO of Indianapolis North. We are ready anytime day or night to make your home or business "Like it never even happened".

Severe Weather Watches vs. Warnings: Do You Know the Difference?

6/11/2018 (Permalink)

During the summer in Central Indiana, severe weather can pop up quickly. It's important to understand the differences between severe weather watches and warnings.

Severe Thunderstorm Watch means that atmospheric conditions are favorable for the development of a thunderstorm in the watch area. A thunderstorm is considered severe when it contains large hail (1" in diameter or greater) and/or wind gusts at 58 mph or greater.

Severe Thunderstorm Warning indicates that a severe thunderstorm is occurring in the warning area or is about to occur. If a thunderstorm warning has been issued in your area, seek shelter immediately.

Tornado Watch means that atmospheric conditions are favorable for the development of tornadoes and thunderstorms in the watch area. It does not mean that it will occur or one has been sighted, only that it is possible.

Tornado Warning means that a tornado is imminent in the warning area. It means that one has occurred or is about to occur. If a tornado warning has been issued in your area, it is important to immediately seek shelter.

Severe weather can strike quickly and leave devastating damage in its wake. If your home or business has been damaged by severe weather, call SERVPRO of Indianapolis North at 317-846-5282. We have the training, manpower and expertise to restore your property to its preloss condition and make your home "Like it never even happened".
