How Finding Mold Can Affect the Sale of Your Home

10/15/2018 (Permalink)

You've decided to sell your home and are ready to put it on the market. Your walls are touched up, you've removed the clutter and every surface is shining. As you prepare to put the for sale sign in the yard, don't overlook one important detail that could seriously hamper your efforts to sell: mold.

Mold exists all around us and is present everywhere indoors and out. Mold thrives and grows in areas where moisture can accumulate, such as bathrooms and basements where there may be undetected water leaks.  Because certain types of mold have the potential to cause health issues, potential homebuyers will be understandably cautious about purchasing a home where mold has developed.

As you prepare your home for the market, carefully examine areas where mold may be growing. Pay attention to musty odors and address any sources of moisture that may be inviting mold to grow.

If you are concerned that your home may have a mold problem, call the restoration specialists at SERVPRO of Indianapolis North today at 317-846-5282. Our trained experts will inspect and assess your property. If mold is found, our technicians have the training, tools, and expertise to take care of your mold problem safely and efficiently.

Mold Prevention in Your Indianapolis Home

10/2/2018 (Permalink)

Finding mold in your home can be a scary and overwhelming experience. Although we at SERVPRO of Indianapolis North are here for you every step of the way to help eliminate mold should you find it, we believe that prevention is the best weapon against mold growth. Follow these easy tips to prevent mold in your home or workplace.

1. Keep the humidity level in your home between 40-60%. A moisture meter can be purchased inexpensively from your local hardware store. Signs of high humidity include condensation on windows, pipes and walls. If you find wet surfaces, dry them immediately and address the source of the moisture.

2. Be sure your home is properly ventilated in areas where moisture can accumulate such as bathrooms, the kitchen and laundry room. Direct vented air outdoors when possible rather than to the attic or other area inside your home.

3. Direct water away from your home by ensuring that the ground slopes away from the foundation. Be sure to keep your gutters clean so water can properly drain away from your home.

4. If you find moisture in your home dry the area immediately and thoroughly, preferably within 12-24 hours.

If you have concerns about mold growth in your home, call SERVPRO of Indianapolis North at 317-846-5282. Our trained restoration technicians have the tools and training to remediate your mold problem quickly and thoroughly.

Fall Fire Prevention Tips

8/27/2018 (Permalink)

Summer is winding down and cooler weather is right around the corner. As we prepare our homes for the change in seasons, keep these fire prevention tips in mind to keep your family and property safe.

Changing the clocks for Daylight Savings Time in the spring and fall is a great reminder to check the batteries in all of your home's smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. The National Fire Protection Association recommends installing smoke detectors in each bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every floor of your home. Carbon monoxide detectors should be placed within 10 feet of each bedroom door and near or over any attached garages. All devices, even if they are connected to security systems, should be powered by always-on or battery devices.

Before the weather turns cold, be sure your heating system is in good working order. Have your central heating system cleaned and inspected each year by a certified HVAC contractor. Have your chimney cleaned and inspected each year as well.

If gathering around the fire pit on a crisp fall evening is part of your plans this fall, remember to place the fire on level ground a safe distance from your home or other structures. Use dry wood or kindling to start your fire, never gasoline or kerosene. Always keep a close eye on children and pets near a fire, and never leave your fire unattended.

It may be hot now in Central Indiana, but fall (and winter!) are right around the corner. Call SERVPRO of Indianapolis North at 317-846-5282 if your home suffers from smoke or soot damage.

What is Black Mold?

6/14/2018 (Permalink)

Finding mold in your home, or suspecting that you have a mold problem, can be a scary feeling. We are bombarded with stories about the devastating effects that mold can have on our health and the air quality inside our homes. Before you begin the process of trying to remove the mold, it is important to understand some basic mold facts.

There are several different types of mold. Although many types of mold are capable of producing allergens and irritants, it is black mold (or Stachybotrys chartarum) that is more well known for producing spores that may cause health effects.

If you suspect you may have a mold problem, keep in mind that any type of mold found in the home should be treated with caution. Do not touch or disturb the mold to avoid inadvertently spreading it around your home.

When you contact SERVPRO of Indianapolis North, our trained professionals will assess your unique situation. Mold grows and thrives in moist areas, so any sources of water or moisture will be addressed. Although every mold situation is unique, the process of removing mold is as follows.

Understanding The Mold Remediation Process

Step 1: Emergency Contact

The mold cleanup and restoration process begins when you call SERVPRO of Indianapolis North at 317-846-5282.  Our representative will ask a series of questions to help us determine the necessary equipment, resources, and personnel.

Step 2: Inspection and Mold Damage Assessment

Our trained professionals will carefully inspect your property for visible signs of mold. Mold feeds on cellulose and water and can be hidden from plain view. We use various technologies to detect mold and hidden water sources.

Step 3: Mold Containment

We use various containment procedures to prevent the spread of mold. We may use advanced containment procedures like negative air chambers to isolate the contaminated area with physical barriers and negative air pressure to keep the mold spores from spreading during the cleanup process. All fans and heating and cooling systems will be turned off to prevent the spread of mold.

Step 4: Air Filtration

Our specialized filtration equipment allows our professionals to capture microscopic mold spores out of the air. We utilize powerful “air scrubbers” and HEPA vacuums to prevent the spread of these mold spores while the mold remediation is in process.

Step 5: Removing Mold and Mold-Infested Materials

The mold remediation process depends on the amount of mold growth and the types of surfaces on which the mold appears. Our restoration specialists use antifungal and antimicrobial treatments to eliminate mold colonies and to help prevent new colonies from forming. Removing and disposing of mold-infested porous materials, like drywall and carpeting, may be necessary to remediate heavy mold growth.

Step 6: Cleaning Contents and Belongings

Our specialists will clean your furniture, decorative items, curtains, clothing, and other restorable items affected by mold. We use a variety of cleaning techniques to clean and sanitize your belongings. We're also trained to remove odors and deodorization using fogging equipment.

Step 7: Restoration

Depending on the level of mold damage, drywall, subfloors, and other building materials may be removed. Restoration may involve minor repairs, such as replacing drywall, painting, and installing new carpet; or it may entail major repairs such as the reconstruction of various areas or rooms in a home or business.

We understand that finding mold in your home is scary. Our goal is to give you the peace of mind of knowing that your home is safe and healthy. Call SERVPRO of Indianapolis North at 317-846-5282 today if you have concerns about mold.

Summer Safety Tips for Grilling Outside

6/13/2018 (Permalink)

Summertime and grilling on the patio go hand in hand. After a long, cold winter and too much time indoors, we all look forward to getting outside and enjoying the warm weather with our families. Unfortunately, 5700 home grill-related fires occur each year, resulting in injury and more than $37 million in property damage. Keep your family and home safe this year by following some basic grill safety rules:

1. Keep your grill a safe distance from your home, deck rails, overhanging branches, and people. Heat from the grill can melt siding and the grill fire can flame up, catching nearby structures and objects on fire.

2. Trim the excess fat from the meat before grilling.

3. Use a wire scrub brush to keep your grill and the trays below clean. Accumulated grease and debris can catch fire quickly.

4. Never leave a grill unattended. Keep a watchful eye on children and pets.

Even under the most careful conditions, house fires can happen. If your home has been damaged by smoke or fire, call SERVPRO of Indianapolis North at 317-846-5282. Our professionals have the training and expertise to get your home back to its pre-fire condition quickly.
