Fall Fire Prevention Tips

8/27/2018 (Permalink)

Summer is winding down and cooler weather is right around the corner. As we prepare our homes for the change in seasons, keep these fire prevention tips in mind to keep your family and property safe.

Changing the clocks for Daylight Savings Time in the spring and fall is a great reminder to check the batteries in all of your home's smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. The National Fire Protection Association recommends installing smoke detectors in each bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every floor of your home. Carbon monoxide detectors should be placed within 10 feet of each bedroom door and near or over any attached garages. All devices, even if they are connected to security systems, should be powered by always-on or battery devices.

Before the weather turns cold, be sure your heating system is in good working order. Have your central heating system cleaned and inspected each year by a certified HVAC contractor. Have your chimney cleaned and inspected each year as well.

If gathering around the fire pit on a crisp fall evening is part of your plans this fall, remember to place the fire on level ground a safe distance from your home or other structures. Use dry wood or kindling to start your fire, never gasoline or kerosene. Always keep a close eye on children and pets near a fire, and never leave your fire unattended.

It may be hot now in Central Indiana, but fall (and winter!) are right around the corner. Call SERVPRO of Hamilton County at 317-773-0422 if your home suffers from smoke or soot damage.
